One day at a time

I'm writing this short post on my 17th birthday, which I never thought I'd see. I want to share what is helping me, and hopefully this could help others with mental health struggles.

Talking helps

As a man, it is very easy to keep things to yourself, I understand this. I think this may be a conservative cultural expectation/social norm. Thus, some people may see this as weak. But I assure you, keeping things to yourself only makes matters worse, but do not expect the person you're venting to will be able to fix all your problems. There are lots of opportunities to talk to people who understand; I especially like The Lowdown in Northampton, just off Gold St (they have a drop-in service!), as I find talking face-to-face about strong topics better. If you prefer over the phone, contact CAMHS crisis (0800 170 7055 option 1, then option 2), or if want to message, text SHOUT to 85258. You do not have to go through this alone.

Distractions

This one works better some times than others, but keep your mind occupied with something you enjoy. Should that be reading, work, going out with your friends - this all depends on what you like.

Self love

You have to accept and love yourself. This is something I am still struggling with. However, my 2 cents is not loving yourself can be a dangerous thing because you end up chasing external validation or love, and it'll end up turning into an unhealthy, toxic cycle.

One day at a time

I cannot stress this one enough. Sure, it is great to look to the future especially if there is hope. But put all your energy handling today instead of fearing tomorrow, stop trying to control or predict things that haven't happened yet, and split large, scary or heavy life problems into smaller pieces.

You will find your own strategies over time that work for you. There may be times where it dosen't seem like it, but things will get better.
